Jody S. Engel, M.A., R.D., joined the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) at NIH as a Nutritionist in 2006. Ms. Engel directs the ODS effort in developing approaches to the investigation of dietary supplements for their potential health-promoting and disease-preventing properties. As a member of the ODS Communications team, Ms. Engel works to improve efforts to provide reliable, science-based information on dietary supplements and further expand the availability of information on dietary supplements and their use in promoting wellness.
Ms. Engel also serves as the ODS Director of Mobile and Social Media Communications. She initiated and lead the ODS effort to design and develop a free ODS mobile app called My Dietary Supplements, or MyDS, to give consumers an easy way to track the dietary supplements that they take and to learn about dietary supplements.
Ms. Engel serves as the ODS representative on several NIH-wide and Federal government agency-wide committees including HHS Healthy People 2020, the NIH Prevention Research Coordinating Committee, and the NIH Nutrition Coordinating Committee. She is chair of the NIH Staff Training and Extramural Programs (STEP) committee.
Ms. Engel has a Master's degree from Tulane University in Applied Social Research and a BS degree from the University of Maryland in Dietetics. She is a member of the American Society for Nutrition and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics where she chairs the Consumer Health Informatics working group.
