Linda D. Meyers, Ph.D., Scientific Consultant (Contractor)


Linda D. Meyers, Ph.D., joined the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) in March 2016. Her responsibilities focus on organizing activities to advance the development and application of evidence-based nutritional requirements or Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs).

Prior to joining ODS, Dr. Meyers was the Senior Science Advisor (consultant) for the American Society for Nutrition from 2013 to 2015. She served as Deputy and then Director of the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) at the Institute of Medicine (now Health and Medicine Division) of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine from 2001 to 2013. In that role, she was responsible for a portfolio that included DRIs; obesity prevention; food safety; and international, military, and specific population nutrition. Earlier in her career, she directed the FNB’s international nutrition program.

From 1986 to 2001, Dr. Meyers was Senior Nutrition Advisor, Deputy Director, and Acting Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). While there, she oversaw preparation of technical and policy reports, including the 1990, 1995, and 2000 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the U.S. Action Plan on Food Security, and Healthy People 2010.  She also managed the HHS Nutrition Policy Board and the presidential/congressional National Nutrition Monitoring Advisory Committee.

Dr. Meyers received her B.A. in health and physical education from Goshen College in Indiana, an M.S. in food and nutrition from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in human nutrition from Cornell University. Her research focused on population indicators of nutritional status. She has lived and worked in Botswana, Kenya and Vietnam.

Dr. Meyers is the recipient of the Surgeon General’s Medallion and other awards for her contributions to nutrition and public health, including the HHS Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award for Healthy People 2010, the American Society for Nutrition’s Conrad A. Elvehjem Award for Public Service in Nutrition, Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition, the Institute of Medicine’s Cecil Award, and the National Academies Group Distinguished Service awards for The DRI’s Essential Guide and for the HBO Weight of the Nation film series.
