Marguerite Klein, M.S., Health Science Administrator

Marguerite Klein retired from the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) in July 2011. She joined ODS in 2008 where she served as the director of the NIH Botanical Centers Research (BRC) program. The BRC program advances the scientific base of knowledge about botanical safety, efficacy, and biological action. She also worked with the director of the ODS Analytical Methods/Reference Materials (AMRM) program to expand the program and integrate components of the BRC and AMRM programs. The AMRM program promotes development of validated analytical methods and reference materials for dietary supplement constituents for use by industry, regulatory agencies, and clinical researchers. In addition, she worked to address challenging issues in research (e.g., soy clinical studies, probiotic safety) in order to improve the integrity of dietary supplement research.

Prior to ODS, Ms. Klein spent nine years with the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) where she initiated and designed clinical studies, including studies of glucosamine/chondroitin, cranberry, and acupuncture. She developed and implemented NCCAM's product integrity policy and guidance for which she received an NIH Director's Award in 2009.

For 15 years prior to NCCAM, she worked primarily in cardiovascular disease prevention at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at NIH, the American Heart Association, and as an NHLBI contractor. During this time she developed and managed national public health education programs for cholesterol reduction and cardiovascular disease prevention and designed and implemented large clinical trials of diet for cardiovascular disease and obesity prevention. In addition, she had opportunities to develop educational materials for a variety of audiences including, children, low-literate adults, and health professionals.

Ms. Klein's academic training includes health education, clinical trials methodology, and nutrition. She received a graduate degree from the Tufts University School of Nutrition which honored her with the Tufts University Expertise and Innovation Award in 2009. Numerous other NIH and NCCAM Directors' awards have been bestowed upon her over her 20-year career at NIH.
