The Federal Working Group on Dietary Supplements (FWGoDS) consists of representatives from federal agencies that share information and discuss issues, initiatives, and research related to dietary supplements. The FWGoDS serves as a means of communication between the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) and its federal partners in several ways:
- to co-fund research investigations within the National Institutes of Health (NIH);
- to expand opportunities for research-investigator training; and
- to strengthen collaborative efforts involving dietary supplement research, education, and communication across the government.
The FWGoDS was established in part on the basis of a Congressional law which specifies that ODS serve as an advisor to federal health agencies on issues related to dietary supplements. It also exists in response to a goal in the ODS Strategic Plan to expand and conduct outreach efforts that inform and educate about supplements.
The FWGoDS has met twice a year since 2005, generally in April and October. It also maintains periodic contact via email and other means as appropriate.
