Annual Bibliography of Significant Advances in
Dietary Supplement Research 1999

Bethesda, MD--The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announces the availability of the first issue of the Annual Bibliography of Significant Advances in Dietary Supplement Research. Developed as a joint effort of ODS and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), this publication illustrates how the dietary supplement field is advancing through quality research.

"We are very pleased with the first issue of this bibliography," said Paul M. Coates, Ph.D., Director of ODS. "It is important to promote sound, scientific research in this field, especially since dietary supplements are being used by so many Americans. This bibliography provides an excellent opportunity to give well-deserved recognition to the scientists conducting dietary supplement research."

To develop the bibliography, ODS and CHPA contacted editors of peer-reviewed journals asking them to nominate original research papers from their respective journals in 1999. In response to this request, over 200 nominations were received and then forwarded to scientific experts to review and identify the top 25.

Rebecca B. Costello, Ph.D., Deputy Director of ODS, said "The ODS is delighted to partner with CHPA on a long overdue publication that highlights scientifically sound research on dietary supplements and their role in health maintenance. The staff of ODS and CHPA are so excited that work has already begun on the bibliography for the year 2000. We envision this bibliography will serve as a useful reference source for nutrition and health professionals, educators, and health communicators, as well as the scientists who conduct the research."

Copies of the first Annual Bibliography of Significant Advances in Dietary Supplement Research may be downloaded from the ODS website at http://ods.od.nih.gov/Research/Annual_Bibliographies.aspx. Single copies may also be requested by contacting the ODS office (301-435-2920 or ods@nih.gov).
