Sarah Marshall joined the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) as a Health Communications Specialist in June 2024. In this role, she assists in the development and dissemination of outreach materials and other activities, including the ODS website, that are designed to inform and educate the public, health care providers, and scientists about the benefits and risks of dietary supplements. She also assists with media relations for the office.
Before joining ODS, Ms. Marshall was the Media Affairs Officer at the Uniformed Services University from 2016 to 2024. During those years, she was responsible for responding to media queries and overseeing interviews, writing press releases, pitching story ideas, and writing for the University’s blog. While in this position, she received the Military Health System’s Kevin Dwyer Memorial Media Relations Award in January 2023. She also received several Defense Media Merit Awards for her writing, including Civilian Writer of the Year in 2018, 2019, and 2023. From 2008 to 2016, Ms. Marshall worked as a Public Affairs Specialist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, coordinating media interviews and writing for the military hospital’s newspaper. There, she also served as Editor of the paper and led the design and production of a variety of communication materials, including an annual Base Guide.
Prior to working for the military, Ms. Marshall was a reporter at the Frederick News-Post from 2006 to 2008. In addition to covering news on law enforcement and crime, she produced a “cops” blog, featuring news about local police. While there, she earned several editorial awards from the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association.
Ms. Marshall received her B.A. in English/communication arts with a concentration in journalism from Hood College. She is currently working on her M.A. in humanities. In addition, she has received Executive Leadership training through Graduate School USA and Public Affairs training at the Defense Information School.
